This course is an introduction to "New York" style salsa for both members and non-members of BAILA Society (no partner required). Students will learn the fundamental footwork and partnerwork figures of salsa social dancing. Students will progressively build on these basics to form figure combinations that can be improvised on the dance floor.
Classes will begin with solo footwork patterns in order to introduce the student to the steps necessary for partnerwork figures. Each corresponding figure will then demonstrate a fundamental skill for salsa social dancing. Subsequent classes will combine new figures with previously learned figures in different sequences to encourage improvisation.
Students will also learn the background and history of salsa dance in New York and around the world, as well as basics of music theory.
